FOUR ALTERNATIVE LIGHT GUIDE TECHNOLOGIES
There are generally different technologies available in many cases to implement a desired lighting application. This can be demonstrated effectively with a fictitious project: a plain white cube surrounded by a homogeneous line of light just below its upper edges. The line produces homogeneous light in various colours – as a status indicator, to provide feedback on the device’s operation, to give a personal touch or for another purpose. This application can generally be implemented using four different light guide technologies: plastic injection moulding, 2D light guide, side light fibre and textile lighting systems. In every project, the decision about which of these technologies to use for it will ultimately depend on many different factors, including for example: the available installation space, the number of units to be produced or the cost per unit and investment parameters.
